Q Argumentative Research Project Peer Reviewed Source Due: Tuesday 5/25 11:59 pm Outline Due: Thursday 5/26 11:59 pm Works Cited Page Due: Friday 6/4 11:59 pm First Draft Due: Saturday 6/5 11:59 pm Final Draft Due: Monday 6/7 11:59 pm Double-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt. font, MLA format and heading with page numbers, Four FULL pages properly formatted , separate from a Works Cited page Topic & Writing Tasks For our final unit of the semester, you will need to choose one of the topics provided for you in your Module for this unit, take an argumentative stance, and defend your position using evidence to back up your position. Your final paper must have 3-4 credible sources, three of which must come from the CBC library databases. All the sources I provide for you would be considered sources from the library databases. One of these must be a peer reviewed source . Your sources should be no older than ten years, but you’re welcome to check in with me if you find a particularly good source—I’ve made exceptions before. A lot of research has been done for you. This research can be found in the Modules and Pages tabs on Canvas. You will be responsible for finding your required peer reviewed source. I will allow you to do additional research on your topic if you choose, but it must be credible research and it must be approved ahead of time. For source approval, email links to your research and I can approve it that way. That also allows documentation of the source approval. I will allow you to use a bit of outside research not from the library databases, but these must be credible sources—see the News Quality Graphic for more information on what this includes. If you need help evaluating a source—ASK! As always, you should read every article actively and critically. And in preparation for writing this paper, it would be a good idea to review the critical reading strategies presented in Chapter 1 (2-20) and argumentative writing techniques in Chapter 4 (84-120). Keep in mind that there are multiple ways to argue within most topics. Pick one that interests you, look at the research, and take a position that you feel strongly about. Another important note: You will be using quoted material from your sources to back up your claims, so part of your paper will be “unoriginal.” I will show you how to view your originality reports and it’s something you should keep track of as you draft your paper. If your final draft reports that more than 30% (read: 31% or higher) is unoriginal, I will not grade your paper and you will receive a zero and you will fail this class. In addition, I will be paying close attention to smaller things like formatting for this assignment. Failure to have a proper MLA heading, page numbers with your last name, correct font, spacing, or margins will be cause for major point deductions on this assignment. Your Audience Obviously as your instructor, I am your main audience, but I want you to assume that I will be reading your paper as someone who feels differently than you do about your topic. Consider me to be a “hostile audience.” You’ll have to use rhetorical devices (ethos, pathos, logos), evidence, strong argumentative writing, and general awesomeness to change my mind. Required Structure of the Paper Follow these guidelines as you organize and write this paper: Introduction-at least one paragraph Introduce the topic with a “hook” to grab your readers’ attention and interest. Make sure you reader know right away what topic you’ll be discussing. Assume that your readers have limited background knowledge of your topic, so be sure to provide a context for them. Your thesis at the end of the introduction should present your side of the argument. Body-at least four paragraphs (3 argument+1 refutation) Specific reasons to back up your argument: Throughout the body of your paper you will need to provide the reader with specific reasons to back up your argument. You should do this by stating your reasons, strengthening them with evidence from your research, and then elaborating on how that evidence proves your point. Opposition: At some point, you will need to address the critics of your argument. You will likely have to concede to some of their points, but you should explain how your position is still logical even when faced with those counterpoints. Make sure when you are addressing the opposition you are respectful and appropriate. Conclusion-at least one paragraph Re-emphasize, without simply being repetitious, your main point. It would also be prudent to explain to your audience the importance of your argument. You should end with a strong statement that provides closure for your reader. Works Cited Page You must have an MLA formatted Works Cited page where you list all of the material you cite in your essay. A Successful Argumentative Research Paper ? Interests the reader with a strong introduction that provides a context for the issue while offering a clear and assertive thesis that directs the action of the paper and reflects the whole document ? Provides a concise and accurate background of the topic to orient the reader with the issue ? Offers strong statements to support the thesis ? Uses solid research and evidence to strengthen its assertions ? Acknowledges counterarguments and successfully defends its own viewpoints ? Uses components of the “rhetorical toolkit” (ethos, logos, and pathos) appropriately to strengthen the argument ? Offers a conclusion that provides closure for the reader and explains the importance of the topic being argued ? Paraphrases and integrates quotations from sources effectively, smoothly, and ethically through appropriate introductory phrases and in-text citations in MLA Style and has a properly formatted works cited page ? Uses third person throughout the paper and does not use second person (you, your) at any point in the paper. Avoids using any first-person pronouns and presents the author’s opinion as though it’s a fact ? Dazzles your teacher and shows her how you’ve developed too trill writing skills over this last quarter ? Has focused, unified, and consistently structured paragraphs ? Exhibits strong concision, cohesion, transitions, and sentence variety in length and type ? Does not have editing errors that distract the reader or disrupt the meaning of sentences ?
